How did Nelson die in battle at sea?
Who fired the shot that killed Britain’s most famous navy Admiral?
The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, celebrates Great Britain’s proud sea-faring heritage and its naval heroes. Of those, none was more famous that Admiral Horatio Nelson. Nelson’s finest hour was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It was also his last. At the height of battle against Napoleon’s French fleet, Nelson was shot and died.
For decades, many stories arose about who the man behind the fatal bullet could have been - including one report from a Frenchman who claimed it was his shot, fired from the rigging of a French ship.
Could a sniper really have targeted Nelson in all the smoke and chaos of the battle? Or was it another, random shot that killed him?
