Who stole her?

Today the Mona Lisa is the world's most famous painting, viewed by 8 million people every year.

Back in 1911, the Mona Lisa was just one of many of the Louvre's masterpieces. And then... she disappeared.

The theft of the Mona Lisa humiliated the Louvre and shocked all of France. Neither the dogged efforts of the Paris police, nor the CSI skills of the era's greatest detective could catch the thief.

But one man did.

Who was responsible for returning the Mona Lisa to the Louvre? And how did the Mona Lisa's disappearance turn her into a superstar celebrity?
