Each year, four million people visit the cathedral of nature known as the NHM in order to see some of the 70 million specimens housed there, but they don’t get to see what we discovered behind the scenes on Museum Secrets.

At the NHM we examined a skull to discover if prehistoric Brits were cannibals, then we went to the NHM’s spooky tank room and pulled a killer shark from a pool of formaldehyde to find out how it helped swimmers win Olympic gold. Next, we dared a curator to handle a famous gem said to curse all who touch it and we convinced a descendant of the original owner to come in and see it for himself. Then we entered a once top-secret room where WWII spymasters created a bomb that came within a hair of killing Hitler. Finally, we viewed the remains of Barbary Lions to find out why they spent their lives in the Tower of London, and we evaluated a perfectly preserved specimen of a Dodo to discover whether the flightless bird’s extinction was really as inevitable as we have been led to believe.
