Discovering lost secrets at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna
Last week we were in Vienna to complete our final shoot in Europe, for the last of our 8 new episodes airing on History Television Canada in January 2012.
For our final episode we had a fantastic shoot at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM), made up of an impressive group of buildings opened by the Emperor Franz Josef in 1891, to house the treasures of the Habsburgs, the Austrian/Spanish royal family that ruled large parts of Europe for 600 years.
We filmed the intriguing stories of some of the museum’s remarkable treasures, including secrets revealed in the Habsburg family portraits, the most unusual armour in the world, and an insider’s account of the theft of $60 million gold Salt Cellar by Benvenuto Cellini. We discovered the connection between rock n’ roll and the Viennese waltz and explored how Frederick II changed the world by following his passion for falconry.
