Visit Israel Museum for a cornucopia of modern art and architecture
For anyone looking for a great modern art museum, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem is a must-see. From the iconic Anish Kapoor sculpture to the David Smith sculpture, there is much to be seen. Director David Langer tells us more about the modern museum, after the recent scout trip there for Museum Secrets Season 3.
“The Israel Museum was a surprise to someone so used to the cluttered medievalism of European museums. Like the land, it has an open modernity similar to the Bauhaus and the glass and steel work of Mies van Der Rohe. It was a surprise to wander the sweeping open galleries exhibiting ancient artifacts from Bible times. The museum feels like a west coast university campus with modern buildings and gardens following the rolls and elevations of the hills.”

“One of the most fascinating areas was the Jewish Art and Life wing which has the complete interiors of four 18th century synagogues form India, Italy, Germany and Suriname. Each one tells a story of holiness and history. It’s remarkable to think how Jews spread all over the world in the diaspora, yet in spite of the diversity, the synagogue remained the heart of Jewish life.”
