In Spain, we meet senior archaeological science lecturer at University College, London, Marcos Martinón Torres, who tells us about the history and dangers behind Spain’s famous Almaden mercury mines.

The mines were operational for thousands of years until very recently due to the risks associated with mercury poisoning. The compounds created when mercury is made are toxic. Thousands of miners lost their lives in the Almaden mines. During its history, the mines produced nine-million flasks of mercury.
