In 1901, in the Aegean Sea near the island of Antikythera, sponge divers discovered ancient Greek statues on the ocean floor.
Among them was a small corroded metallic artifact that has become known as the Antikythera Mechanism.
Because of its complexity, historians initially assumed it must have been created much later than the statues. But the statues and the mechanism have been dated to the same century.
Some believe the Antikythera Mechanism’s origin might be extra-terrestrial.
